AP Club Turns Back Time on Napoleon Field Trip
Written by Domino Gardina

apft1The AP Club recently visited the traveling museo of Napoleon while it was on display in Anaheim.

The museo was stocked full of genuine articles of Napoleon and artifacts belonging to members of his family. This gave the AP club members, especially in an AP history class, a greater understanding of the things that they have been learning about.

"I will always remember the authenticity of the beautiful intricate paintings where each one had its own story or theme portrayed," said sophomore Crystal Rodriguez.

The museo was filled with the more customary items such as Napoleon's bed and his China set. It also included some of the more odd items like Napoleon's gardening clothes and a piece of wood from his coffin. All visible pieces of Napoleon's life made the subject more tangible.

"He became a real guy to them when they noticed he doodled," said Robert Hargis, club advisor and history teacher,

To get the full value of the experience, however, students must be prepared with an understanding of the time period. The curators told Mr. Hargis that "our kids were the most dialed in, asked the most questions, were the most well-behaved...of any high school they've ever had."

As this field trip was purely an academic one, the students going along for the ride had to evaluate a single item of their choice. Students chose items to evaluate like portfolios, math books, and snuffboxes, hopefully keeping their minds going on their day off from their school schedules. With this assigned task the students had to analyze the properties, uses, and users of the object in question as well as sketching a quick picture.

This field trip was enjoyable and informative to all on the trip, making it a success. Students walked away with a new knowledge and understanding of Napoleon-the man behind the emperor.
