At Sultana High School, the Sultans wrestling team defeated the Apple Valley Sun Devils by a score of 37-31 to guarantee a share of the MRL title and the #1 seed with only Serrano left on their schedule.
The Sultans now hold an overall record of 8-2 in dual meets, and 3-0 in the MRL. Despite leading league, it's been a rocky year so far with many of their top wrestlers out due to injury.
"It's been a real struggle with injuries and illnesses this year," said Coach Rocky Humphrey.
Despite and early lead, several close matches had things tight until Michael Gonzalez stepped up to 152 to secure a one point decision, and Ryan McWatters also scored a close decision to put it away.
Relying on guys to move weight classes and fill in for injured wrestlers is tough late in the season, but it shows that the young team is growing.
"It shows confidence and team support because they know what to do and get it done," said junior Rod Keaster.
The Sultans now only have Serrano left in MRL as they prepare for another postseason run.
